New Jersey’s first Wind Turbine Technician Program

If you love being hands-on and are interested in joining the booming clean energy industry, becoming a wind technician could be the right fit for you. 

New Jersey has a huge target for building offshore wind farms, and this is your chance to jump right into this high-paying and rewarding career.

The program will have full-time hours Monday to Friday, approximately 8 AM - 4 PM​.

WHAT DOES A TECHNICIAN DO?

As a wind turbine technician, you can work on maintaining offshore wind turbines, onshore and offshore substations, and provide O&M facility support. You will access offshore assets by boat or sometimes helicopter to ensure the smooth operation of an offshore wind farm.

Wind turbine technician is ranked #1 on U.S. News & World Report's list of “Best Maintenance and Repair Jobs for 2022," and the Bureau of Labor Statistics has proclaimed it the second-fastest growing occupation in the country, with a projected 68% increase in job growth by 2030 and a median annual salary of $56,230.


PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Wind Power Ready program was developed in partnership with Ørsted, the global clean energy leader and U.S. leader in offshore wind. This full-time paid training program ($15 per hour) lasts 22 weeks and will support you in getting ready to join the industry by gaining practical skills and developing the capabilities needed to become an offshore wind technician.

Ørsted has the goal of hiring 40​% of their incoming turbine technicians from the Wind Power Ready Program. Ørsted technicians are paid $65,000 per year plus benefits, well above the industry average.

With this certificate on your CV, you will have all the backing needed to be recruited to work on the operations & maintenance of New Jersey's first offshore wind farm or the many others under construction up and down the East Coast.

SYLLABUS

Each week, the program will focus on a different subject. Some days you will be in the classroom, understanding the theory behind it all. Other days, you will have a hard hat on and be job shadowing a current technician, exploring things on a boat, or receiving ​experiential learning at heights, over water.​

In just 22 weeks, students will gain the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to become entry-level wind turbine technicians. The Wind Power Ready program is open to people of all genders, races and ethnicities. Students who successfully complete the Wind Turbine Technician training program will earn 15 RCSJ college credits towards the Wind Turbine Academic Certificate.

Student Eligibility

  1. Must be a New Jersey resident

  2. Must possess a High School Diploma or the equivalent (GED certificate)​, and

  3. Must be 18 years of age​​

Electrical and mechanical experience is a plus.  Working at heights experience is a plus.

Supportive Services

Employment readiness support will be provided by the Center for Family Services, in close coordination and consultation with RCSJ.  These will include support focused on soft (interpersonal) skills, conflict resolution, financial planning, attitude, communication, planning and organizing, critical thinking, teamwork, professionalism, digital literacy/online applications, and more.
