Nuclear Medicine Technology, A.A.S.

Nuclear Medicine is the use of radioactive materials and sophisticated electronic scanning equipment to diagnose and treat certain suspected or known disorders of the human body. The three most common procedures are organ imaging, laboratory analysis, and therapeutic administration.

Students enrolled in the 22-month Nuclear Medicine Technology (NMT) program spend the first year building a core of liberal arts and science courses. Summer sessions focus on the basics of NMT instrumentation, clinical procedures, and patient care. The second year is spent primarily in clinical training, with additional instructional courses at the College.

NMT students must complete the minimum number of required hours of clinical instruction, which are scheduled throughout the program in collaboration with clinical affiliates. Clinical hours occur during the fall and spring semesters of the second year.

Program Goals

The program will:

  • provide a safe and affordable didactic and clinical learning environment.
  • provide a comprehensive curriculum that aligns with current entry level practice in the field of nuclear medicine technology.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Nuclear Medicine Program at Rowan College of South Jersey is to prepare students for licensure and employment in the field of Nuclear Medicine Technology and/or for the pursuit of an advanced degree in Health Science. The program is dedicated to providing a safe and affordable learning environment for developing knowledgeable, compassionate, and culturally sensitive technologists who are committed to ongoing personal and professional development.

NMT Program Student Learning Outcomes

The NMT student will learn to:

  1. work effectively as a member of a healthcare team by respecting diversity, communicating effectively, and providing patient care in a competent, ethical, and compassionate manner.
  2. demonstrate knowledge by applying entry level competencies of clinical imaging procedures, instrumentation, radiopharmacy and radiation safety and biology in the clinical environment.
  3. recognize and articulate the importance of continued personal and professional growth to enhanced quality of life and maintain high professional standards, in the field of Nuclear Medicine Technology.

Admissions

NMT is a selective admissions program. Students must be accepted to the program before registering for any NMT courses.

Rowan College requires all students accepted into the NMT program to complete a criminal history background check (CHBC), a mandatory requirement of clinical agencies to engage in patient care. Students denied the opportunity to participate in the clinical agency as a result of the CHBC will be dismissed from the NMT program.

The NMT program accepts a cohort of students once per year to the program. Current admissions requirements can be found on the Selective Admissions website.
