On Monday, June 9, 2025, Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ), Gloucester County, and Clayton School District leadership, gathered to recognize 20 freshman high school students who have been accepted into RCSJ's Collegiate High School program.
RCSJ Collegiate High School takes education to the next level, providing an affordable, practical way to earn college credits and prepare for the rigors of excelling in a collegiate environment – all before high school graduation. Participating high schools can now offer students the option to take college classes from their high school classrooms or one of RCSJ's two campuses.
These 20 freshmen were identified based on academic achievement, applied to the program, and passed the college-level Accuplacer Test to participate. The Accuplacer Test helps colleges gauge student readiness for required coursework and identify areas where students may need additional support to succeed.
“To the students being recognized today, you are trailblazers. You were selected, had to apply to the program, attend a meeting with your parents to show your commitment, and pass a college level test," said Nikolaos Koutsogiannis, superintendent of Clayton Public Schools. “The RCSJ Collegiate High School program at Clayton is very important – it's what I want Clayton High School to be known for – providing the opportunity for our students to earn college credits and, if they want to, earn an associate degree before they graduate high school. That's the goal. It will be hard, and it will take a lot of work but that should be your goal."
To provide this opportunity, RCSJ and Clayton faculty and advisors aligned the curriculum to RCSJ's degree pathway programs. From this collaboration, three academies were created: Business Administration, Allied Health, and Cybersecurity.
With guidance from their high school counselors and teachers, as well as support from their parents, students chose an academy. As part of the academy, students can take at least two college classes per year and one credit per course will be paid by the Clayton School District at the discounted tuition rate. If the student earns a B or higher in the course, the school district will reimburse the cost paid by the parent/guardians.
“I know this accomplishment did not come easy to any of you, but you did it. You earned it. Just keep on the path that you're on now because you are going to continue to succeed. You are the success stories of this educational pathway you have chosen - keep reaching for the stars," said Gloucester County Commissioner and Education Liaison, Joann Gattinelli.
Joe Valentino, director of Guidance and Counseling at Clayton High School, announced each student's name, recognizing their accomplishment and acceptance into the Collegiate High School program and respective academy. Parents celebrated in the audience as the students were recognized. “I'm so proud of each of you. Congratulations. This is a big accomplishment," said Valentino.
