Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ) is proud to highlight the national impact of its Innovation Studio and student talent, as student worker Caden Miller, a Computer Science major from Westville, was selected to design and produce custom awards for the Instructional Technology Council's (ITC) national eLearning Conference. The conference was held this year at Austin Community College.
This marks the second time Miller's work has been featured at a national ITC event. Previously, he designed and built graduation plaques for ITC's Leadership Academy, a three-day summer program hosted on RCSJ's campus that brought together distance education professionals from across the country.
For the national eLearning Conference, ITC specifically requested Miller's involvement following the success of his earlier work. Using equipment in RCSJ's Innovation Studio, Miller designed and fabricated acrylic “medals" to honor recipients of ITC's instructional design awards. The awards were created from clear acrylic sheets using the studio's laser cutting and engraving technology.
“These opportunities demonstrate the real-world, hands-on experiences our students gain at RCSJ," said Brooke Litten, RCSJ instructional designer and chair of ITC's Marketing and Communications Committee. “Caden's work represents the creativity, technical skill, and innovation that define our Innovation Studio and the students who bring it to life."
Miller, who works under the College's Information Technology department, has been involved with the Innovation Studio since its inception, helping build out the space and bring its capabilities online. His work on national projects underscores the Studio's role as a hub for experiential learning and advanced manufacturing.
The Innovation Studio, located within the College's library, recently hosted ITC representatives during their visit to campus. Organized by Litten, the visit included meetings in the library's new collaboration spaces and a tour of the Innovation Studio. Guests experienced hands-on demonstrations, including building small “fidget robots" featuring the RCSJ logo—an engaging introduction to the Studio's capabilities and a popular takeaway for visitors.
According to ITC leadership, hosting events at community colleges like RCSJ enhances the authenticity of their conferences. “It means our attendees talk about eLearning innovation as they walk through it," ITC shared in a recent feature. “Our National Excellence in eLearning Awards are beautiful and 3D-printed by students at Rowan College of South Jersey's Innovation Studio."
RCSJ continues to expand opportunities for students to apply their skills in meaningful, real-world settings, reinforcing its commitment to innovation, collaboration, and workforce development.
