Senior Corps

​Mission

Senior Corps, part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, provides volunteer opportunities for individuals who are at least "55 years young." The organization matches volunteers' interests and talents to a rich array of service options, also addressing the surrounding community's needs. Senior Corps welcomes individuals from all socioeconomic, educational and professional backgrounds. Volunteers serve on a regular basis in a number of community settings.

Program Overview

Senior Corps membership is free, in which volunteers also receive such perks as informational newsletters and take part in annual recognition luncheons. Helpers serve an average of three or four hours per week via placements at local nonprofit agencies, hospitals, schools and community institutions. Volunteers report their hours to the Senior Corps office each month. In addition, Senior Corps members may qualify for travel reimbursement and are covered by "On Duty" accident and liability insurance.

Casa - Court-appointed advocates for abused ​and neglected children

Youth Services - Coordinate activities for youths

Daycare Centers - Work with classroom teachers

Food Banks -Collect and distribute food

Libraries - Assist librarians and staff

Hospital - Assist same-day surgery patients

Schools - Tutor, serve as teacher's aide

Visitor - Visit shut-in residents

County Park And Recreation - Assist recreational programs

Head Start - Help in classrooms

Hope - Grief Counseling

Juvenile Detention Center - Help and support teachers

Thrift Store - Collect and merchandise donated items

N.J. Ombudsman - Advocate for nursing home abuse and neglect

Nutrition Sites - Assist in serving and delivering meals  to shut-in residents

Office Assistance - Assist with data input, general office duties

Reassurance Callers - Provide daily calls to shut-ins to check on medications and wellbeing​

History

  • 1965 — Launched by the Community Service Society as pilot project Serve and Enrich Retirement by Volunteer Experience (SERV)

  • 1969 — Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) started as part of the administration on Aging by Title VI, Part A of the Older Americans Act

  • 1971 — Eleven programs launched in June under the auspice of the Administration on Aging

  • 1973 — Designated as ACTION'S Older American Volunteer Program (OVAP)

  • 1993 — OVAP reauthorized as the National Senior Volunteer Corp and named the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)

  • Current — Now known as the National Senior Service Corp and Administered by the Corporation for National Service​
