An introduction to the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE), how colleges can form their own ASHE student chapters, and  the advantages of joining a student chapter

FrankSeney
Manager of Remington & Vernick Engineers, Infrastructure Group’s South Jersey Region
Thursday, September 30, 2021, at 11 AM
Join the Zoom Session

The American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) is actively encouraging the development of student chapters throughout is operating area. The benefit to students in running and participating in ASHE student chapters is significant. This presentation will introduce ASHE through a short video and will describe how the two New  Jersey sections - North Central New Jersey and Southern New Jersey - operate and how students can become involved. The second part of the presentation will explain how colleges can form their own ASHE student chapters by emphasizing the components needed to not only form the chapter but also to ensure their sustainability. The presentation will also demonstrate the tremendous advantages in joining a student chapter and the professional career opportunities that will develop as a result. They can also use the Society to meet engineers of numerous firms to discuss career opportunities and learn to network at the Society functions.

How NASA observes & studies ice sheets & how computer models help us to estimate how ice sheets will change in the future

Dr. Josh Cuzzone
Scientist at the University of California Los Angeles
Thursday, October 7, 2021, at 11 AM
Join the Zoom Session

Dr. Josh Cuzzone studies how glaciers and ice sheets change across various timescales – from the geologic past to our future.  He uses and develops computer models that encapsulate the relevant physics of ice flow to simulate the various factors that control how glaciers and ice sheets change and travels to the Greenland Ice Sheet during summers to collect data on how the ice sheet is currently changing. Currently, we know that ice sheets will continue to melt into the future and contribute significantly to sea-level rise, which has the potential to affect populations globally.  However, we are less certain on How Much and How Fast the ice sheets will change. His research helps us understand how fast glaciers and ice sheets will respond to future climate change and ultimately how they will contribute to sea-level rise globally.  Here, he will discuss how NASA observes and studies ice sheets and how computer models help us to estimate how ice sheets will change in the future.

Dr. Cuzzone is originally from Connecticut where he grew up admiring the strength and power of wintertime storms that often hit the East Coast, known as Nor’Easters.  His fascination with weather led him to obtain a Meteorology degree from Rutgers University and a Master’s degree in Atmospheric Science from the University of Wisconsin.  While taking a glacial geology course at Wisconsin, he became interested in studying how climate change affects glaciers and Ice Sheets.  This led to a move to Oregon State University where he obtained a PhD in Glaciology in 2015, where he studied glacier change in Scandinavia.  His skills in Meteorology and Glaciology took him to sunny Pasadena, Ca where he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.  There he helped develop computer models used to study how the Greenland Ice Sheet responds to climate change and he continues to use these models today as a Scientist at the University of California Los Angeles.
