About Us

​​​The services provided in the Center for Counseling and Wellness Services (CWS) is an eclectic counseling of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) — also called Solution-Focused Therapy, Solution-Building Practice therapy — was developed by Steve de Shazer (1940-2005) and Insoo Kim Berg (1934-2007) and their colleagues. As the name suggests, SFBT is future-focused, goal-directed and focuses on solutions. It explores current resources and future hopes, and typically involves only three to five sessions. It has great value as a preliminary and often sufficient intervention and can be used safely as an adjunct to other treatments.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy helps individuals become aware of inaccurate or negative thinking so challenging situations can be viewed more clearly and responded to in a more effective way. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can be a very helpful tool in treating mental disorders or illnesses, such as anxiety or depression. Not everyone who benefits from CBT has a mental health condition; it can be an effective tool to help anyone learn how to better manage stressful life situations.​​


Database of Community Resources

This database provides students with information about available resources as well as facilitates referral to needed services. This entails providing a student with information and educational materials in a variety of behavioral health areas. The student is provided with information about healthy emotional and social functioning as well as information on psychological dysfunction. The latter includes information on the causes of dysfunction and treatments that might be effective in reducing the symptoms of those conditions. Support Services & Crisis Intervention

CWS provides literature on a variety of topics related to personal adjustment and growth, as well as information on depression, anxiety, eating disorders, personal relationships, suicide, trauma recovery, drug and alcohol abuse and other behavioral health areas.
