Our Mission

AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP, part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, provides volunteer opportunities for individuals who are at least “55 years young.” The organization matches volunteers’ interests and talents to a rich array of service options, also addressing the surrounding community’s needs. AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP welcomes individuals from all socioeconomic, educational and professional backgrounds. Volunteers serve on a regular basis in a number of community settings.

Who Are We

AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP membership is free, in which volunteers also receive such perks as informational newsletters and take part in annual recognition luncheons. Helpers serve an average of three or four hours per week via placements at local nonprofit agencies. Volunteers report their hours to the AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP office each month. In addition, AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP members are covered by “On Duty” accident and liability insurance.

Programs & Resources

The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) provides free help to New Jersey Medicare beneficiaries who have problems with, or questions about their health insurance. SHIP is a statewide program administered by the New Jersey Department of Human Services with financial assistance through a grant from the U.S. Administration for Community Living.

Do you need help with the confusing Medicare System or Part D Prescription Plan? Having trouble choosing a supplemental health insurance company? Let our staff of trained S.H.I.P. volunteers help. We offer confidential and free assistance on all forms. Watch this video for more information.

Medicare beneficiaries frequently have questions about benefits, claims and supplement policies (known as Medigaps). Volunteer counselors, trained in areas of health insurance coverage and benefits that affect Medicare beneficiaries, provide information and assistance for dealing with claims and in evaluating health insurance options.

Volunteer counselors do not provide legal advice, sell, recommend, endorse any specific insurance product, agent, insurance company or plan. They provide information and assistance so that you can make your own decisions. Counseling is free of charge. To contact a SHIP counselor, please call (856) 468-1742 or email [email protected].

The Stress-Busting for Family Caregivers is a 9-week program that consists of weekly, 90-minute sessions with a small group of caregivers. During these sessions, caregivers will learn many new skills, including information about the disease process, stress management techniques, and a variety of other content. These sessions also provide caregivers with an opportunity to share their experiences and learn from each other.  It is designed to improve the quality of life for family caregivers who provide care for people with Alzheimer’s disease, and other related dementias. This program helps caregivers manage their stress and cope better with their lives.

Please note that all dates are subject to change due to attendance levels. There is no cost for this program; the only requirements are that you reside in Gloucester County and that you do not suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s.

For more information or to register, please call (856) 468-1742 or click here to register online.

We offer assistance enrolling eligible applicants into the following programs:

  • The Pharmaceutical Assistance to the Aged and Disabled (PAAD) program is a state funded program that helps eligible seniors and individuals with disabilities save money on their prescription drug costs. Call us for current income limits. PAAD only looks at income and does not consider assets.
  • Lifeline Utility Assistance
  • Medicare Savings Programs (SLMB & QI-1) –if qualified, the deduction for the Part B Premium will be put back into your social security check.
  • Medicare Part D’s Low-Income Subsidy (LIS) also known as “Extra Help”
  • Hearing Aid Assistance to the Aged and Disabled (HAAAD) — now $500
  • Universal Service Fund (USF)/Low-Income Heating and Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP provides volunteers to make calls and visits to Gloucester County seniors or challenged adults who are homebound and/or isolated and in need of companionship.

All of our volunteers are background checked and trained. As an extra precaution, all volunteers providing in-home visitations are required to be fingerprinted. Our volunteers provide support for our most vulnerable population; our seniors, who are trying to “age in place at home” and remain independent. There is no caregiving involved, it’s just for companionship, talking, playing games, or watching a show. Our volunteers are not permitted to drive you anywhere, but they can take walks in the neighborhood with you. A great new friendship could just be a phone call away.

There is no cost for this program; the only requirements are that you reside in Gloucester County and that you do not suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s.
