This program is for multilingual speakers aiming to transition into credit-bearing college courses and earn a degree.
Enrollment Process
The ESL Academic Program at RCSJ is a thorough, semester-based program designed to prepare multilingual speakers for successful transition into college-level English courses. Focusing on academic reading, essay writing, critical thinking, grammar for academic contexts, and oral presentation skills, the curriculum integrates classroom instruction with college-style assignments and research practice.

Placement & Structure
Students are placed by initial assessment (ESL Accuplacer) into multi-level cohorts and progress through sequenced modules over one or two semesters, with embedded writing labs and regular instructor feedback. The program includes targeted grammar, vocabulary for academic discourse, and writing practice with citation styles.
Support & Outcomes
Support services include tutoring, academic advising, and student orientation to campus expectations. By program completion, students should demonstrate readiness for freshman composition (as measured by the exit assessment), improved academic communication skills, and the study skills needed to succeed in mainstream college English courses.
English as a Second Language (ESL) – Academy of Youth & Adult Literacy
Rowan College of South Jersey’s (RCSJ) Academy of Youth & Adult Literacy offers English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction designed to help adult learners develop the language skills needed to succeed in everyday life, education, and the workplace.
Through engaging instruction and practical learning experiences, students strengthen their English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while building confidence in communicating with others.
In addition to English language instruction, all students receive Civics Education throughout their enrollment, providing opportunities to learn about U.S. history, government, citizenship, civic responsibilities, and community engagement.
Students also have opportunities to develop essential computer and digital literacy skills, explore career pathways, prepare for employment, and build a foundation for college or career training programs. Participants are required to provide proof of residency in the state of New Jersey.
Flexible Learning Options
Classes are offered through in-person and online learning opportunities to accommodate the diverse needs and schedules of adult learners. Students participating in online instruction should have reliable internet access and a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer.
Take the Next Step Toward Your Future!
Whether your goal is to improve your English, advance your education, prepare for a career, or become more confident in your community, RCSJ’s Academy of Youth & Adult Literacy is here to support your journey.
