First Day Complete - Frequently Asked Questions
First Day® Complete is a course material delivery model that simplifies the student experience, lowers the cost of materials, and ensures students have access to all of their required course materials on or before the first day of class. Through this innovative program, physical books are conveniently packaged and provided to students on a rental basis, and access to digital material is directly within eLearning/Blackboard, at a cost per credit. At the end of the term, students will receive email reminders to return rented physical course materials to the bookstore.
Register for your classes and the bookstore will start preparing your course materials.
Before classes start, you will receive an email instructing you to select your delivery preference for physical materials (in-store pickup or shipped directly to you). An email notification will be sent when your order is ready for pickup or when it ships.
Your digital materials will be delivered for your course(s) within eLearning/Blackboard.
The program provides all required textbooks, eTextbooks, lab manuals, and access codes to students.
The program does not include consumable course supplies that cannot be returned and reused such as art supplies, lab goggles, dissection kits, molecular model kits, engineering kits or nursing kits.
All students registered in any credit-bearing courses are automatically enrolled in this program.
The charge for textbook rentals will appear in your semester term bill as a “First Day Complete" line item when you register for a course. You can view/pay your term bill online through your student portal, or with the Business Office either by phone or in person. There will not be a separate bill for textbook rentals.
Yes. Students can opt-out of the First Day® Complete program each semester during the opt-out window. If a student chooses to opt-out, they are opting out of the program for all courses in the entire semester, not on a course-by-course basis. By opting out, students will not receive their required materials in a convenient package, and access to digital content will be removed after the opt-out window closes. Options for purchasing course materials after opting out can be found on the bookstore website.
The opt-out windows for each semester:
Fall 2025 - 08/18/2025 to 09/22/2025
Winter 2026 - 11/23/2025 to 12/18/2025
Spring 2026 - 01/05/2026 to 02/09/2026
Students who begin a course after the end of the opt-out window should email the bookstore about opting out: [email protected]
The deadline to return all rental textbooks is the last day of final exams for the semester. Students will receive reminders ahead of the rental deadline to their email address.
If you do not return your rentals by the deadline, you will need to pay Barnes & Noble a replacement fee for the materials. If rentals are not returned and you do not pay the replacement fee, you may be ineligible for the First Day Complete program for future semesters.
Yes, the program provides you with the option to purchase any rental textbooks at a reduced rate during the semester.
