Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is the initial level of certification available for emergency medical services personnel. EMTs are the first to respond to the injured in emergency incidents such as automobile accidents or medical situations. They assess the nature and extent of injury, provide initial medical care and transport the patient to a hospital if necessary. EMTs have the basic knowledge and skills necessary to quickly stabilize and safely transport patients ranging from non-emergency and routine medical transports to life threatening emergencies. Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response system, while under medical oversight. Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic equipment usually found on an ambulance. Emergency Medical Technicians are truly a critical link between the scene of an emergency and the health care system.
Employment of EMTs is projected to grow 15% from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations.*
About the Program
This program meets all of the required National EMS Education Standards for training Emergency Medical Technicians. Students will be required to read their textbook as well as successfully complete detailed online course work every week and attend one night of classroom practical skills instruction per week, in addition to several Wednesday sessions during the program. In addition to the class sessions, students will be scheduled for clinical experiences in 9-1-1 dispatch centers, in both basic and advanced care EMS units, and in a hospital. Successful completion of this program allows students to sit for the New Jersey Emergency Medical Technician certification examination as well as the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians' certification examination.
