Program Learning Outcomes
This curriculum provides two years of concentrated study in science for those who plan to pursue a baccalaureate degree in Environmental Sciences. This is a science and math-based program to prepare students for understanding and analyzing data. Communications, Social Science, and Humanities courses that put environmental science in the context of history and how to approach solutions are also incorporated. Students are advised to plan their course selection based on the requirements of the vocation or curriculum of the four-year college of their choice.
Students who have completed the program should be able to:
- Understand and apply basic scientific principles to the study of environmental issues overall including the use of resources in a sustainable manner
- Develop and demonstrate the basic skill set, techniques, and procedures required to conduct and analyze field and laboratory work in environmental sciences
RCSJ graduate and current PHD student in Ecology, Matt Pierce, discusses his academic career and time at RCSJ. His research focuses on the community and population ecology of marine invertebrates in coastal salt marshes. Matt describes his family ties to RCSJ, as well as the smooth transition to Rowan University and then graduate school. Matt participates as a mentor in Green South Jersey as a way to give back to his community. Green South Jersey is a program to help and foster growth of minority students in Environmental Science in industry, internships, and research that will strengthen them to be competitive workers in the field. He praises his degree and the doors in opens to students, including jobs in environmental consulting, lab technician and field technician jobs, and even more jobs with a four-year degree. Matt advises students to keep in contact with their advisor, and praises his own advisor, Professor Melissa Young. He also describes the financial support programs available to him, such as the School Counts and NJ Stars scholarships, which allowed him to attend RCSJ tuition free.

Education Unique to Each Student
My experience at RCSJ has been very community oriented. My participation in the STEM club has been invaluable. I've also made other connections, like at Rowan University and Princeton University, offering one-of-a-kind research opportunities.
