Program Learning

Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) provide essential support and services to individuals with physical, mental, and developmental disabilities of all ages. DSPs assist participants with daily living activities such as cooking, shopping, attending appointments, housekeeping, medication management, and community engagement, including employment support. They promote independence by instructing and motivating individuals to complete tasks on their own while offering guidance in essential life skills such as interpersonal communication, financial management, and seeking assistance. DSPs also maintain accurate and confidential records, including case notes, daily activity logs, medication documentation, financial records, and behavioral assessments, ensuring high-quality, person-centered support.

This program prepares participants for a career as a DSP through comprehensive, no-cost training, hands-on experience, and clear pathways for professional growth in the allied health and human services field. Participants complete DSP competency modules, including the DSP certificate course, CDS training, Mental Health, and PersonAbility, as well as required orientations and an 80-hour internship. The program provides access to employer connections for internships and employment opportunities and allows participants to earn up to six college credits applicable toward an Associate of Arts Degree in Sociology at Rowan College of South Jersey. Participants may also enroll in additional college-level courses in human services and social work to further advance their careers.
