SMOKE AND TOBACCO FREE ENVIRONMENT

To ensure compliance with the New Jersey State Law (N.J.S.A. 26:3D-55) concerning the provision of a smoke-free workplace that protects, preserves, and fosters the health and safety of all persons, the College prohibits the use of tobacco products by students, staff, faculty, and visitors on all campus grounds, in campus buildings, facilities, and property owned or leased by the College, except in identified designated smoking areas. This administrative procedure includes such events as: lectures, conferences, meetings, athletic, social and cultural events held on campus property.

  • For the purposes of this procedure, tobacco is defined as any type of tobacco product including, but not limited to cigarettes (e.g., clove, bidis, kreteks), cigars, and cigarillos, pipes, hookah smoked products, oral tobacco (e.g., spit and spitless, smokeless, chew, snuff), nasal tobacco (e.g. snus), and electronic smoking devices (e.g., e-cigarettes and associated products).
  • The sale or free distribution of tobacco products, tobacco-related products, and electronic smoking devices, including all associated merchandise is prohibited on campus and at College events.
  • Student organizations are prohibited from accepting money, gifts, or sponsorship from tobacco companies including:
  • Events sponsored by tobacco companies and allowing them to distribute free, reduced price, or fully priced tobacco and electronic smoking device products (T-shirts, hats, etc.) on campus.
  • All tobacco and electronic smoking device advertising, such as billboards and signs.
  • Tobacco and electronic smoking device advertisements are prohibited in college-run publications and on College grounds or facilities, including athletic facilities, owned and operated by the College with the exception of advertising in a publication that is not produced by the College and which is lawfully sold, bought, or distributed on College property.
  • Posting of signs:
  • The College will ensure appropriate signage and other physical indicators of the regulation are provided.
  • Compliance:
  • Any student or employee who uses tobacco products or electronic smoking devices in violation of this administrative procedure is subject to the provisions of applicable laws and/or College disciplinary action.
  • Students: 1st Offense: Verbal/Written Warning, 2nd Offense: $10.00 fine, 3rd Offense: $25.00 fine, 4th Offense: $50.00 fine. Littering will also carry a $25.00 fine per offense. Subsequent violations will be reviewed. Disciplinary action may be taken, up to and including suspension. Failure to pay fines will result in the withholding of future registration activity and diplomas/certificates until paid in full.
  • Employees: Employees who violate this policy may face disciplinary action in accordance with administrative procedure. See administrative procedure 7009 Employee Conduct and Work Rules.
  • Visitors: Visitors include vendors, contractors, and consultants. While on the College property, visitors must abide by the same standards as students and employees. Any visitor who does not abide by the College policy after being advised to do so will be asked to leave the campus and may be prohibited from returning.
