Program Learning Outcomes
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program prepares students for rewarding careers as skilled sonographers. Sonographers utilize high frequency sound waves to visualize and assess various anatomical structures within the human body. As part of their responsibilities, sonographers meticulously capture high-quality diagnostic images and provide insightful interpretations of their findings. This comprehensive program prepares students to excel as entry-level sonographers, emphasizing proficiency in abdominal, gynecological, and obstetrical scanning. A central focus lies on delivering optimal patient care within the context of our culturally diverse communities.
Students who have completed the program should be able to:
- Correlate patient history to construct a comprehensive overview
- Pass the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) upon graduation
- Perform appropriate procedures and record anatomic & pathologic data for interpretation
- Perform quality diagnostic exams and optimize images using ultrasound equipment features
- Appropriately modify protocols based on individualized patient circumstances and sonographic findings.
- Utilize professional communication skills when interacting with patients and members of the healthcare team
- Integrate legal and ethical concepts into the practice of sonography

Education Unique to Each Student
The support I received at RCSJ means a lot, especially being first-generation. It meant a lot having those people there to guide me, have 100% trust in me to do what I said I was going to do, . . . and believe in me even more than I believed in myself.

DMS is a selective admissions program. Students must be accepted to the program before registering for any DMS courses.
Rowan College requires all students accepted into the DMS program to complete a criminal history background check (CHBC), a mandatory requirement of clinical agencies to engage in patient care. Students denied the opportunity to participate in the clinical agency as a result of the CHBC will be dismissed from the DMS program.
